Team ATS has developed a Network Security Assessment practice that addresses the critical network security issues mandated by the State of Maryland Office of Legislative Audits (OLA).

It is our understanding that the OLA conducts fiscal and compliance audits of each unit of State Government at least once every three years in accordance with State Government Article Section 2-1221 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The objectives of the audit are to examine the agencies internal control over its data center and network and to evaluate the compliance with applicable State laws, rules, and regulations. This generally includes an assessment of the security controls for critical routers, firewalls, switches, and virtual private network appliances, as well as an assessment of security controls related to the agencies wireless connectivity (if applicable) and the use of software vulnerability assessments for critical network servers. The OLA focuses on major areas of operations based on assessments of materiality and risk and their procedures include inquiries of appropriate personnel, inspections of documents and records, observations of OIT’s operations and transaction testing as necessary.

The OLA utilizes industry standard benchmarks from the MD State Dept of Education and SANS, a cooperative research and education organization, best practices from The Standish Group International, Inc., information from the University System of MD (USM) Guidelines in Response to State IT Security Policy, procedures from the Department of General Services Inventory Control Manual. The OLA assesses network vulnerabilities within the data center and across the agencies network.
